I am starting a collection of the Liberty V nickels and I figured I would kick it off by acquiring the original No Cents coin. I ended up buying this one online. As I am rather new to the looks of this series and the hobby overall I was hoping you folks could check it out and let me know what you think of the quality.

Nice nickel. Looks VF-20 to me.

It has sort of a "washed out" look, but I assume this is a scan, which tends to make coins look that way.

I noticed that washed out look as well. I am hoping the same thing...that the picture is the culprit there.

I agree, looks like a scan; but appears to be a nice coin to me.

OK, I just got the coin yesterday and I was pleased to see that the actual coin is better looking than the pic! (How often does that happen?)
Anyway, I got to looking at that little dark spot under the letter "I" in Liberty. I don't want to start scratching at it for fear of gouging or scratching it. I think these coins are a little on the soft side.
Any idea what it could be and how to possibly remove it?

You have two choices;
1. Have a professional do it, although it will probably cost you. ($)
2. Do NOTHING! or you and the coin will pay the price

If it does not come off after a dunking in acetone, then you are stuck with it- meaning it is probably either a carbon spot or toning. NCS would be out of the question since the coin is of low value. Nickel is a hard metal(of course the coin is only 25% nickel) but if you were to poke at it, you would more than likely leave at least fine scratches.
Rest in Peace

If the spots aren't any worse than what is in the scans I'd leave them there!
The reverse on mine has similar spots,but they don't bother me, just adds to the history of the coin. After all they are 125 years old!

I will most likely not mess with it. Coinaholic, I like the second image of the 1883 coin there...is that the actual tone of that coin? It looks golden!

It's a "Racketeer Nickel" it has been plated gold, at the time with no cents being on the coin certain unscrupulous types would try and pass them as five dollar gold pieces. If the merchant wasn't aware they would give $4.95 change on a 5 cent purchase. Pretty good money in 1883!

I wish it were an original, but it's a newly plated one I picked it up here; http://www.govmint.com/default.asp Then go to other U.S. coins, then on to Nickels
