I'm sharing an American Numismatic Association blog write-up that I just drafted that should provide insight that Dwight D. Eisenhower was a numismatist at heart and that he donated his coin collection to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958 (while still actively serving his second term as the 34th President of the United States).

Also, while serving as the 34th President of the United States he used his numismatic mindset to create a series of fourteen appreciation medal types.

The write-up can be also read :

This photograph was taken at the Smithsonian American History Museum (officially called the National Museum of American History).

A Numismatist at heart? Looks likehe had a small grouping of 12 random well worn coins.

Nice read at the link - thanks. It took me awhile to understand your wording though of "President Eisenhower's coin collection donation contained one-hundred eight-nine pieces. "

I finally concluded you meant the 1968-69 coins mentioned in the letter from the museum?

@conder - when you take the link and read the whole thing, it mentions he did have a lot more than the 12 shown.

You have to read the PDF...

I've read the links and still see nothing to indicate a "numismatist at heart".

I suppose it is a matter of opinion then. I freely admit bias in accepting the statement as true.
