That is what is known as the Poor man's double Die, which is just Machine Doubling and not a true Double Die. The double Die for the famous 1955 is extreme and cannot be mistaken.

The So Called 'Poor mans doubled die' is actually a die wear coin. Not a machine doubled example. The dies on the wheat cents of the 1950's were way over used. So with the heavy die wear, they were other die events that happened because the die were used till the die, died.

This is called Die Deterioration Doubling. It's notorious on the 1955 Lincoln Wheat Cents. http://www.error-ref.com/die-deteri...on-doubling/

Rest in Peace
