It is a DDD, Die Deterioration Doubling, very common on 1999 Nickel's since the die's were over worked beyond their life expectancy.

I agree with Chase007. It's Die Deterioration Doubling, caused by a worn die. http://www.error-ref.com/die-deteri...on-doubling/

Except...is it DDD Die Deterioration OR MD Mechanical Doubling? Remember that Die Deterioration follows the flow of metal OUTWARDS as dies age, NOT inwards toward the center. OP's pic is rotated 90 degrees CW, therefore the appearance of a shelf-like Strike Doubling becomes obvious that it is indeed MD.

First off, OP didn't show complete coin, this may have shown other areas affected as well. Even if no other area had MD, this still would be, for the simple reason RPM's ended in 1992 with the advent of the single-squeeze presses and the hub design manufacture.

I'm pretty sure Crazyb0 is correct. I wasn't completely sure myself, since the picture is blurry and pixelated.

It is MD. Doubt it's DDD.

@Docsrose, any chance of you posting an overall pic of both sides of this nickel?

RPMs not possible after 1990. The MD is on the inside of the device. So it is not Die Deterioration as that would be on the other side of the coin.
