I've searched and searched and cannot find a definitive answer on an edge lettering question regarding the 1836 Bust Half O-119. I have the expected vertical lines separating the words but is there a star(s) as well?...and if so, what is its proper location? My Thanks as always.....
My 1936 lettered edge half has no stars and says fifty cents or half A dollar, with vertical lines after fifty, of, and A. I don't know if this is a specific variety you are researching. Sorry no edge photographs.
My 1836's & my 1835's have a star between the words "Dollar" and "Fifty". I imagine they used it as a somewhat starting point. None of my 1834's have a star though. (That's all I looked through, because my eyes aren't geared for that small of print anymore)
I find it interesting that the reference material does not appear to note the single star, its purpose or its location. On my 1836 O-119 there is one star located after DOLLAR and before FIFTY so it appears we now have a corroborated answer. My Thanks!
I don't have time right now to look through the article, but your best bet to finding an answer would be Leaman and Gunnet's article on lettered edge halves here......https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/512710?page=4
