Greetings guys, I usually don't deal with ancients besides the few roman bronzes I have, but my dad asked me to help him identify some of the ancient Judean/Greek/Roman coins he has. Essentially, I've got this Alexander the Great AR Drachm from 336-323 BCE that I'm way over my head with. He bought it in the 90's and he swears it's authentic, but just wanted to make sure is it real? What's the variety, and what would it be worth? Thanks!

I am going to stick my neck out and say it is probably genuine
But ........
It appears to have survived through a fire of some sort. This is not unknown for ancients.
My first ancient was a silver drachm of Alexander which had been fused on the edge with another drachm by melting.
It is damaged goods and as such the value seriously affected

The value in this condition would probably be in the $40 to $70 range

You could "ask" for that but it might take years to get it
Back in the early 90's I saw dealers selling gem Alex drachms by the bowl full at international shows.
The price back then was around $25 for VF+
Hopefully this one was purchased for much less than that

From pictures only , it looks genuine to my eye.
Has suffered corrosion problems from direct contact in ground burial.

It is a bit 'sandy' around the nose area (obv.), and around the arm area (rev.), but that may be due to sub surface silver crystallization. Seems to be OK everywhere else. Silver crystallization can severely weaken a coin, and make it brittle.

It may be worth your effort to learn a little more about silver crystallization by
Google, or Google Images:
'silver crystallization in ancient coins' (or similar).

It does appear genuine but does also appear to have environmental damage.

I will definitely look into silver crystallization.
