No offense to those of you who enjoy the Parthians, but I was looking through a large amount of, well, "affordable" AR denarii -- the usual suspects -- but when I saw PARTH on the obverse I grabbed this one and "hit the books."

It's been through a lot, to say the least, but it's still mine and I didn't have one of these, of course...corrections/thoughts appreciated. I don't think it's fake but you never know.

Marcus Aurelius. AR Denarius, 165-166 AD.
Rome mint. RIC III.163a
A little over 19mm, and about 3.3 grams.

Recognizes his brother and co-emperor Lucius Verus' military successes in Parthia and the resulting concessions and territories won from Vologases IV.

Obv: M ANTONINVS AVG ARM PARTH MAX
Laureate bust facing right

Rev: TR P XX IMP IIII COS III
Victory standing front and facing right, holding palm in right hand; in the left, a shield inscribed on two lines with VIC PAR is being placed on a palm tree.

Geez, first all of those Sasanians from Ron, now a PARTH MAX denarius from you, Adam. Oh, the indignity of it all.

Seriously, nice one - with a strong profile that's held up well. Congrats.

It's okay. I'll do penance by picking up another Parthian coin in the future. ;)

Thanks for the kind words as usual.

I did not know much about the PARTH MAX / VIC PAR design -- well, nothing really -- but I picked up on the fact that it was quite different from what I usually see in the "bargain-denarius" browsing. So I think that's kind of how I am learning more about ancients is looking at lots of similar coins and looking for ones that are unusual or different from the others, like this one vs. the usual Annona/Providentia/Abundantia/etc. reverses.

It will only count if it's a Volo IV. Karma.

VIC PAR : Victoria Parthica : Victory over Parthia : Victory , holding a palmbranch, remenbers the military successes in Parthia as the titles on the obverse : ARMeniacus and PARTHicus : surnames derived from the conquest of Armenia and Parthia .The VIC PAR design is typical for coins of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus . albert

"Inexpensive" Vologases IV seems to start around $150 so I might have to save for awhile to acquire one of his coins, but I'll be sure to post it when I do.
