I posted this a few months back and all the opinions I got were that it was just a die gouge. After seeing a similar post of a 1959 penny recently I decided to look at it again and do a little more research. I was able to take better pics this time under more magnification and in a diff light and was able to see some other evidence that I think backs up my RPM theory. I couldn't find anything remotely close to this on wexler or Lincoln center resource except for a 59 rpm that affects the last 9 and doesn't look as much like a mintmark as this does. Anyways, I'd like to here some opinions now with diff pics. The issue I'm talking about is very obvious which is why I think it would be considered a best of variety. It is shaped exactly like the top left corner of the D mint mark and there is a slightly raised area that curves like the shape of the D and sticks out from the bottom of the 9. There are actually a couple other things that I couldn't get great pics of but lead me to believe this stuff might be leftover from the previous years die and/or they tested out different positions of the devices and the mintmark. You can also see a ton of die scratch marks from polishing and the majority of the polishing done on the obverse was only where the date was. Anyways, let me know what you guys think. Thanks as always

It looks deceptive, but I'm seeing a die crack as it extends below the 9

For me, your second-to-last pic is the most telling. I agree that there are two things: one attached to the number 9 which looks a lot like the top of a letter D mm and a curved bit below the number 9 which looks like the back of a letter D mm. However, when taken together, they don't seem to add up to the correct shape. You could overlay the actual mm on this region to confirm that this hypothetical mm would be too skinny and tall. My best guess is that you have a die chip and a bit of a gouge or polishing mark on the die.

That's very interesting! I don't think it's an RPM, but rather a Die Gouge. Maybe you can send this in to John Wexler for attribution?

Doesn't look like an RPM to me. More like a die gouge.

Very interesting.

Some parts look like another mintmark punch but others don't. I'm leaning towards gouge but I can't rule out RPM.

This is one I'd submit to Wexler. Even if it's not a RPM, he may list it as a UFO Variety (Unidentified Fascinating Oddity).

Thanks guys. Yeah, if it didn't have that little curve on the left side I wouldn't be as convinced but when you compare it to the one listed on Lincoln center resource for 1959, this one looks more like a RPM because of shape and location. That one looks more like a gouge or the remnants of an old device and it's so close to the edge of the coin. Seems a bit out of place for a MM but that's what they have it listed as. Should I send Wexler some pics first to see if it would even be worth shipping it to him? I haven't done anything like this before

Die cracks, scratches and die chips on the 19. Below the 9 die flow is enlarging that crack making it wider.

What I would do personally first, is send pictures of your coin to him. Then if he says he needs to see it in hand, then you ship it out to him. doubleddie.com/402401.html
