So I got rid of the Sacagawea folder, because I did not want to pay a premium for the not intended for circulation clad coins, & the holes in the collection were driving me crazy... So I decided to get a US mint Harris album for Jefferson nickels. I thought it would be a nice, easy, cheap long term project, that we occupy my obsession for a while. I figured that I could probably pull almost all I need for the set from roll searching- maybe two rolls a week for a while. I already had a War Nickel set so I had most of the harder ones to find in circulation. Or so I thought Then I realized yesterday that it has holes for 30 S proofs that I don't have and won't find 1971s - 2000s So to get proof nickels for these holes, I have to find them broken out of mint sets? Or did they sell rolls of them, like they did with the sacs? Would it be an investment that held its value if I paid the prices being asked for on ebay? Are there any cent, quarter, dime, or half dollar collector on CCF that have the proof nickels laying around from broken open sets? Finally, why does the empty album hole torture me so?

I have a 1968S proof Jefferson I found a little while back in roll hunting. Quite a nice find. Interested in it? If so, email or PM me. Thanks!
~Mike~
EDIT: Also, with the economy in shambles in the US right now, I have seen alot of people spending their collections or coins they have alot of. Now if I can only catch them before someone else does. Thats' the hard part. So, it is possible to find them in circulation now.

PokerMike, Good point about people spending there collection. I found a George Washington Comm. and a Statue of Liberty Comm. at my bank. The girls didn't know what they were (thought they weren't real halves) so I said with slouched shoulders, I guess I'll take them. Not a mark on them. Straight out of the proof case right to the bank then right to me for $.50 each. Everyday is not Christmas though.

The value of Proof nickels. Hmmm. In the food chain of proof coins, nickel proofs are probably at the bottom. Several reasons.
a. There just aren't that many nickel collectors and many of those are just like you - roll hunting, pulling from pocket change because you really can get 90%+ just by doing that. So Proofs aren't on these people's radar screens. b. The Mint made generally 3 million+ of each year. That's a LOT by Proof standards. Then add low demand. c. There's no silver involved. That alone will get some people to collect them. d. There are a lot of dates to get! (I think this is what kills the popularity of the Kennedy sets - there are so many of them plus you have to get BOTH the clad and silver versions...) e. Having said all that, I think proof nickels are over-priced in the market place given the high mintages and low demand.
I'd love to hear from people who disagree on this. I actually collect Jeffersons and enjoy them. However, you have to be realistic as well!

I agree with all your points Kabiye_Lady. I guess I will just wait around and hope someone who is breaking into mint sets for other coins may want to trade or sell here. No holes specifically for the Special mint sets of 65-67.

MINT_MARQ....don't necessarily give up hope on finding any proofs in roll searches. I've actually found proofs of all denominations except cents in circulation, and other NIFC coins. For example, my girlfriend and I have been roll hunting Kennedy half dollars for the past month or so, in hopes of getting a complete set of business strikes, including NIFCs. And we've found some. To date, we've found: 1970-D 1972-S 1974-S 1981-S type 1 2004-P and 2005-P satin finish. All from rolls. Sometimes you get lucky. Persistance pays off. You could probably get some of the proofs, it'll just take longer.

I have a spare 1970S nickel that I wouldn't mind trading or selling. PM me if interested. Edit: I would also add that I've been collecting Jefferson nickels and the proofs really aren't all that difficult to get. I'd bet that you could get all of them from members here, ebay and your local coin shop. I'm still working on some of the proofs myself. So far they haven't been too pricey.
