I was taken aback to find the post office telling me I couldn't do this. I then told them they were medals but they said they couldn't be responsible for it. Why? I've seen hundreds of people on here do this. Is this for valuable australian currency and whatnot? Seems like it. Weird. So best way to do this? UPS? or what?

On the customs form put anything EXCEPT the word coin numismatic curiosities metallic collectibles blackmail incentives magnetic oddities USPS is the way to go as it's the cheapest way to send coins first class international. Most commonly used I think is "numismatic items." It's short, sweet, and the postal service and customs have no idea what it is

I've sent many coins to AUS without a hitch. Personally, I don't understand why some POs have issues--and some don't. I try to keep the weight down and "obviousness" with any shipment, and just write "hobby supplies" on the custom form.

lol yeh shadow it's what you put on the description, yeh Hobby supplies or numismatic items is/are what we write. Keep my Quarters safe Put the coins between cardboard and staple the cardboard together (avoiding the coins), then they become more secure as well.

G'day, there have been threads on this before. The Post Office staff are not being capricious - it's just that many staff are unaware. USPS regs prohibit sending cash to Oz, but not to other countries. Probably because OzPost prohibits cash in the mail. Funny thing is, I claimed, through an ebay seller, when a coin went astray, and I got paid. Some descriptions I have seen include "numary" (my favourite), momento, souvenir. USPS First Class is the way: priority is much slower; private carriers can't find Oz. Peter

Thanks everyone, I'll try this. Since I did talk to them for awhile I might just have a friend drop it off. Does customs actually xray stuff? They said they did. But I guess they couldn't prove anything just from that.

If you walk into a store and ask..."Do you guys use security cameras?" what do ya think is gonna be their answer?

No, I meant the post office said that customs x-rays stuff. The guys there seemed completely clueless seriously. And they didn't seem to understand why I thought it was a huge joke that they wouldn't allow coins. I mean seriously....

Call 10 different post offices and talk to 10 different people. You will get 10 different answers about the legality of shipping coins in the mail
Legally the only thing you can't do is ship coins/gold/watches/etc. by Express Mail International

My last shipment of coins from Ellekitty in the US were opened by Australian Quarantine as they got some sort of indication the package might contain a prohibited import.
Nothing 'bad' was found & nothing was removed. First time it's happened & I've received dozens of parcels from the US.

LOL
I had the same thing happen. The post office lady was acting like I was smuggling heroin or something, it was pretty funny. She couldn't tell me exactly why it wasn't allowed but seemed to think there was something wrong with it. I had to get in here and start the same thread.

I think ElleKitty must have put some Catnip in the parcel, then changed her mind & took it out.

Thanks all for your help! I managed to get the coins sent today, this time I just asked for customs forms first and acted casual. Helps that the person at the desk was some teenager who didn't care, the older people seem to be more uptight about it.
