I recently purchased this 1916 D Mercury dime online. I'm looking for another's opinion. I just sent it to be graded. This is the first coin I've sent off. I know there are scratches and damage to the coin, but what are your thoughts on authenticity?

to the funny farm...

Thoughts?

1) Uh-oh....
2)
3) Hope you didn't pay too much, because you'll lose any ability to return due to time frame of offer(usually even at 30-day)
4) Hope it comes back as anticipated but have a very bad feeling it won't. Funniest looking "D" mintmark, sure looks like a squashed "S".
5) too worn really to accurately attribute, and yea, will be detailed and gut says body-bagged.

All the above is because it is really almost impossible to ID it correctly enough by pix. Even an FR2 would be a $200 coin raw, if you paid less than that, it is most likely NOT a 1916D, highest faked and passed off scam around. Good luck, for your sake hope you scored big, will be quite surprised. Let us know when it comes back please.

Maybe it's the pictures but I can barely see the date and I don't see a mint mark at all. Hopefully you got this for really cheap otherwise you could be disappointed. Best case, maybe you can get a fair02-details grade if it truly is a 1916-D. Hopefully it comes back legit, good luck!

Sadly if this was bought in person it will very likely be almost if not impossible to return. I would fully expect any dealer who willingly peddles a raw 16-D like that (assuming those pictures aren't hiding details) to not give a return

Welcome! Hoo-boy, don't see 1916 or D, plus all the scratches and digs. We have all paid 'tuition' in this teaching hobby. Some steeper than others. Hopefully not too much for you.

Feel free to post pics here before making a future purchase!

Doesn't look like a 1916-D to me. Hope you can get your money back.

Difficult as it is to tell, that mintmark looks like an S, not a D. The upper left corner of a D would look like a corner. That one looks rounded.

Looks like a 1918 to me. And I don't think the mint mark is even visable.

This piece is severely damaged and is (likely) not a 1916-D as noted above. Sorry.

Ahh, I'm speechless ! Your worried about authenticity ? Worry about how will they be able to tell if that is what you bought it as . I and many others would only pay melt for that coin if found in a junk box .
Hope I wasn't too harsh .

I can see the mintmark, doesn't look like a D. I can't make out the date.

Not to pile on, but I wouldn't have paid anything for this, much less a grading fee. At best it's in a details holder if not bagged.

I see the other post is locked, so I forgot to mention buy from reputable dealer that has been authenticated by 3rd party. NGC or PCGS to protect your investment.
