Seller says it is toning. I've never seen a copper nickel FE with toning. I say it is corrosion/environmental damage. One this is for certain, it is ugly. Perhaps a Chinese fake made out of who knows what? Edited by jimbucks 07/24/2018 11:51 pm

My oh my. It's crazy how we interpret pictures differently. There is NO evidence of corrosion on this coin. To my eye it is a beautifully toned example. My only concern would be the halfmoon of beautiful toning just above the date. I'm not sure what would have caused toning like that.

Stared at it for 20 minutes. I'm not a specialist on this series. If it is fake it would have fooled me.

Looks authentic to me. I don't see any of the tell tale markers that the usual counterfeits have. The toning might be heat applied but just a guess.

Patina or toning: same thing. Corrosion is where the surface of the coin is damaged. Same chemical process for all three.
Color of coin on screen OK to my eye. Very weak in the lettering and tail feathers on the FE side. ?Struck through grease? Localized dark color patches due to accelerated or more localized chemical processes.

I've never been comfortable with toned copper, so my opinion doesn't carry much weight. That said, my first thought was environmental damage. Pass.

Quote: But according to this website, copper-nickel alloy coins do not tarnish. From Rick Snow's website.....

There are scratches above the date and a scratch in that dark toned spot. I wouldnt pay a premium personally, most likely would get a details grade from TPG. Looks cleaned and retoned to me.

Toning IS corrosion. It's just pretty corrosion. The OP coin does NOT look natural to me.

Agree. It is genuine but lacks eye appeal, straight or not.

I really don't know if they are NT or AT, but as far as CuNi toning (tarnishing), these definitely have, so it's at least possible. I think proof surfaces may be more susceptible to it. We all know the golden tone nickels can take on.

Get that coin and allow it to sit in Acetone for several years. Might not make a difference but not being able to see it for a while might make it look better.
