I collected several mint bags of 1972 pennies some 46 years ago and just started to look through them (I was busy:)). I found a handful already that have odd looking dates (doubled?), but the other wording looks correct. Any ideas what I'm looking at form the magnified picture I took?

To CCF! This is Machine Doubling on your coin, since the devices are reduced in size, and it's shelflike (flat) in appearance. There's no premium over face value for this error unfortunately, as it's very common. http://www.error-ref.com/machine-doubling/

Bags of 1972 you say, I'm thinking you're going to find a bunch of Doubled ones. Just beware of the Master Die Doubling commonly found this year. The rarer ones are out there, but learn the difference between the common and less common.

See link below. Seems like 1972 cents have been the topic of the week.

Can see your coin image ok, but can't zoom in enough to make out whats going on. Actually current image does seem like a nice example of MD after looking again. Thanks, Doug.

Here is what the Master Doubled Dies look like:

Guess about 50% are from all three mint having this doubling. Worth one cent because they are common.
Machine Doubling was very common on cents on the 1968-1972 cents.

If the doubling looks flat, then it is probably MD.
