Since I am in a period where I don't feel like buying any coins, I am now enjoying getting old coins from pocket change. Like today I got a worn down 1940-D nickel. It's not really much but it's neat to still be able to find older coins this way. I think there is something to be said actually finding coins and going through rolls rather than just buying the coin. I think it's the thrill and excitement of the hunt.

Yeah, that is pretty cool. A couple of months ago we got a proof dime in change at the Wawa.

I keep wondering if some kid got his butt kicked for raiding his parents proof sets to buy a pack of smokes. [:0]

Why do you guys think I work at the bank? All those coins just waiting to be searched! You never know what you'll find until you start looking!

When I was a kid the nearst coin store was 700 miles away. Each each year they had a coin show that was 120 miles away. Most of us kids found our collections going through coins at the bank and the cornor grocery store. We would ask our grandfather & grandmother if they had any any. Most had a little box of stuff.

It was always a great thrill to find a Buffalo nickel or Indian Head penny. Keep at it nds76. You will learn a lot about coins this way.

I look thru about 3000 pennies a week, I get about seven wheats per thousand, I have also taken Indian head pennies from rolls,in the last month or so two from the same roll, I have found BU rolls of 1964 cents,1976-D,1995-P ,along with any number of coins with anomolies of all sorts,

All in all one of my favorite ways to collect.

Spending a snowed in weekend searching coins is probably the best thing any collector can do. You can search for errors, varieties, and can even practice the grading skills. The best part is that you may return any of the coins not wanted. So you can basically have a fun filled weekend searching through thousands of coins for FREE.

Some of my best finds:
1895-P Barber dime in AG
1902-S Barber quarter in Good
1854 w/arrows seated half (returned to owner) name on roll
1903-P Indian cent in VG
1941-P Mercury dime in VG
1932-P Washington quarter in Good

My best find is probably still the 1910-S Wheat cent. That's the closest I have found to a "key" date of any series. There was also the Seated Liberty dime (returned to owner- he uses it as his golf marker!!! ), the 1923 Peace dollar, the Canadian large cents, the eight Indian Head cents... I could go on but I'd have to dig the box out again.

Well, the junk silver and foreign coins are- the good stuff is stored in albums! Don't worry, I wouldn't do that to my Morgans or Cats! (Still working on those pictures, BTW)
