I had a 1981 penny that the last 1 was almost sideways and the consensus from the experts was that it took a hit. somehow something hit it just perfect to moved it. Maybe a kid with a screwdriver and a hammer altering it for the fun of it, maybe something random and accidental. personally, that is what I think your 7 looks like. But trust me, I have been wrong before. I am sure there will be a lot more people joining in on the conversation in the morning. Great first post. Great eye, and welcome to the forum. I hope you stick around. Lots of things you didn't even know you didn't know out there in the Coin World.

To CCF! This is damage unfortunately. The metal has been pushed over and flattened.

Thank you for the warm welcome and help. I have been racking my brain on this for a few days now trying to figure out what or how it could have happened. What gets me the most is that you can still see the normal outline of the "7".

You're very welcome and no problem! Oh yeah, you can still see that outline of the "7". Whatever hit the "7" in the date caused the metal to move over to the left perfectly.

Possible cause is probably vending machines or casinos.

The pushed part of the 7 is parallel with the rim, so I think much of that damage (7 and letters) was caused by feeder fingers of a coin rolling machine.
