I having been tossing the idea of buying 1964-2018 uncirculated coins sets around in my head for a while now. I see them on ebay with a range of prices. Any value in collecting all of the sets? I see this set on ebay currently, is it a good price? Waste of money? Do/Don't collect the US uncirculated sets?! https://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-2018-...202152635656Thanks for any input Kyle

The value depends on what the buyer is will to pay. I have a good number of these sets that I collect. I do not break them out. Some collectors buy them and break them out for a specific coin. I am slowly adding to my collection of these - as in one or two at a time every now and again. I would shop around if you are looking to buy the a whole '64 - '18 set. And consider buying by the decade to make sure you want to collect this type of set.

I used to buy U.S. mint sets directly from the mint in my earlier collecting years . After a few years I guess you can say I found them boring as a lot of the coins had hits, marks, and other small issues which I didn't expect from uncirculated mint sets . Long story short ,I stopped buying them and put my money in to other nice coins that interest me . I can't tell you what to do ; but if you want a recommendation from a long time collector - look away from THAT e-bay listing .

Thanks, seemed high price but I thought maybe it would be neat to have them. I wasn't sure on collector value or anything like that or any predicted value in the future. I would much rather have some high grade slabbed pre 1940s coins: Trade dollars, gold indian heads, CC Morgans, walkers, barbers etc. I know there is and always be value in them.

Thanks Conder. Was kind of my thought, I enjoy collecting other coins more, but was interested on thoughts of future profits. I'd rather have beautiful slabbed coins that I would enjoy collecting more, but thought of maybe picking the uncirc sets up to put away and see if any value ever came of them. I guess I should look at it as "the sets now aren't worth much, so why would they be in the future"...

Mint sets can be good for finding verities but I still wouldn't pay much for them. The biggest issue I have with them "mainly 64-mid 70" is condition of the coins is all over the place and if you do find a good coin it will most likely have a residue from the plastic they used to package them back then.

Mint sets ae one of the best values in coin collecting.
There aren't many left and there's a steadily growing demand. One of these days I believe these are going to collide.
Look for nice sets with nice coins. It's probably best to cut the coins out and soak them in 91% alcohol.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I used to get many sets for Christmas presents. I stopped that when I saw how the prices only dropped.

Given how the value of the them has declined over the years, it is a very good way of getting high grade coins for very little, especially if you buy them a number of years after issue.
A lot the early canadian ones (say over 20 years old) can be obtained for little over face value if you get them in bulk and are friendly with your LCS.
My LCS has also sold me older US sets for little over face/ silver value as there is little demand.

I collect the uncirculated sets out of tradition. As an investment, not a good idea. There are years that appreciate in value but not enough to make it worthwhile. kylecolb you hit the nail on the head when you typed, "I would much rather have some high grade slabbed pre-1940s coins: Trade dollars, gold Indian heads, CC Morgans, walkers, barbers etc. I know there is and always be value in them." That's the way to go! Also, I do buy the annual US Mint silver proof sets because they'll always have the silver melt value behind them. Sometimes, the sets can be purchased for less than the original list price on e-bay!!
