Found this 81 P Quarter in a coinstar machine last week. When I picked it up it felt thinner and lighter so I put it to the side. It was a few days before I thought to sit down and weigh it, and sure enough it is a gram light. I saw on ebay a few 81P quarters struck on nickel planchets, but they weighed 5 grams. Any thoughts? It is pretty ugly, which is what makes me think it was acid shrunk. Taken a few hits, and has some possible environmental damage.

Also looks like a roll ender (after the damage).

That is one ugly quarter. I would spend it before you get it next to a good coin.

Looks like it's been dipped in acid, causing the coin to get eaten away. The edges should be paper thin, if that's the case.

It looks like environmental damage to me.

Would environmental damage cause it to lose weight though?
I have an acid shrunk penny that is very pitted. This doesn't look as pitted but haven't looked at it under the loupe yet.

I am thinking it spent a good amount of time in some salt water. Then was recovered by someone metal detecting the water .. at the beach.

GR58, that sounds like a very good possibility.

Hadn't thought of that. I do live near the coast. Very plausible. Thanks!

The coin was definitely dipped in acid.
