Any negatives to keeping graded coins in a gun safe? I know the oils can damage raw coins, but what about slabbed? It's humidity controlled

I have heard there are issues with safes and humidity... but if you take the same precautions you would take with guns (which are after all metal that can rust) you should be OK.

Do you have any ammo in the safe? Even though the slabs are sealed, it wouldn't hurt to put them in Ziploc bags with a gel pack or put the ammo in ziploc bags. Not sure what affect ammo fumes might have on anything coin related. I have my ammo in Ziploc bags in the safe

I use a gun safe for my collection at home, its what was available and on sale at hardware store. It has no guns or ammo inside. The door is not sealed air-tight, so I have desiccant or silica gel packs inside to absorb the moisture.

EDIT - forgot to added, slabbed coins are NOT air-tight.

I have the same thing as Fuzzy, never seen guns or ammo, just keep fresh desiccant packs in the safe.

Just remember a thief that can carry that safe will now get your entire collection too.

Not likely it's the size of a stand up freezer and then bolted down to the floor and walls, also you would have to remove the door frame to get it out.

If weapons are stored in it also, then it's not so good.
Some of the cleaners used on guns are not good for coins.
If you can smell the gun cleaners then the air is contaminated.
And if the cabinet is wood there is a strong possibility of contaminated air.

If you can smell it, it ain't good.

Good luck getting the safe up a flight of stairs, after removing the bolts holding it down and being packed full. Ain't anyone getting that safe out!

I see no problem with it, as long as it's in a good and stable environment.

What was quoted above is the key to any home safe - it needs to be bolted down so that folks wishing to cart it away will not be able to do so.

Gun safe for coins? - likely just fine if it's only coins and you bolt it down.

I've had coins in my gun safe for years, along with my guns. I have a Golden Rod dehumidifier in there as well to keep the temperature slightly above room temperature, which drives out humidity. The coins have not shown any negative issues. You're good to go so long as you have some sort of dehumidifier in it.
