That's a shame. I've noticed on ebay that some of the major coin dealer sellers use some types of sprays and wax to make the coins better than they actually are.

Why is it I feel ashamed for what my dealer sold me? I actually bought an entire series 1909-1941 from the guy for around 2 G and thank goodness the keys all slabbed with a grade (all one full grade below) what was claimed. The 22 no D strong reverse came back VG10 but I paid Fine12 for it etc. etc. Cents is all I do and in 2 years I have come leaps and bounds. I'm actually very lucky to have been hit for only 500. Keep in mind all coins were raw, I only had an old RedBook and a pocket full of 100's as my guide.I was a local coin dealers "dream come true". I thankfully can laugh at my greenhorn bull in a China cabinet mentality. Newbies...learn your craft let me be a warning to all

Good lesson to learn early in your collecting experience. However, I'm glad that none of the coins came back fake!

Well, I am glad that this did not turn you off collecting completely.

Not uncommon, just another way to fool inexperienced collectors. I know a few dealers that routinely put Coin Care on ALL of the circulated wheats to make them glossy. When I see that sheen on any coin, I reject it immediately. A worn copper cent should show it's age and not have "perfect" and clean surfaces.

with Bad Thad , and with the wear and tear on that coin I only would have paid around $14 . Lesson learned .

10-4 on that. I have a small group of sellers I buy raw coins from now but I started out with small purchases and over the past 18 months developed a good relationship. I get the feeling there are hundreds of sellers who are more than happy to relieve me of any unwanted extra cash I no longer have use for. Mostly I buy slabbed coins from GC sometimes have to pay 80% book but have never been burnt. Seems like a good time to buy the tough ones. Sold $1,300.00 worth of what I call scatter coins (coins not relavent to my variety set goals) and ouch! Apparently the free market didn't appreciate those coins as much as I did? This penny collecting is costing a pretty penny. Does the hunt ever end?

luvmyCAM get good at grading for yourself and don't worry about making mistakes along the way, they are leaning experiences. Even the pros make bad buys from time to time.

Some sellers are unfortunately always looking for ways to burn people out of their hard earned money.

Just chalk it up as 'tuition' money and keep on learning. We've all bought the coin before the book. Glad you're still into them!
