We stumbled on this museum while in Paris last week, underneath the plaza next to Notre-Dame. My fascination with coins and archaeology in one place! It has 2000 years worth of in situ ruins surrounded by displays of coins (found there or in the area, not sure), from Roman to medieval and beyond. I remarked to my daughters that one case alone had over $10000 just in gold bullion value. I know next to nothing about ancients but this place was really cool. Just thought I'd share.

Very interesting. Paris has a lot of history buried under the streets.

The coins are on loan from the Musee Carnavalet while it is closed for renovation. It is a wonderful, less frequented museum that has a large numismatic collection related to the history of Paris.

Here is their curation of the first gold piece in your photos:

The coins weren't necessarily found in Paris, but have some kind of Paris connection (in this case because Julien loved Paris and stayed there several times ... I guess the Lutece equivalent of "George Washington slet here:

Thanks for the additional info tdziemia. I wonder how long the loan is. I suspect it's rather "permanent" since the crypt wouldn't be half as good without the coins, and the brochure indicates that Musee Carnavalet runs the websites for this and the catacombs (so it seems like there's a strong connection). They also seemed to go out of their way to not say specifically where the coins came from. I tend to travel without any real agenda, so this was a lucky find. It's very nondescript in the corner of the plaza, I saw the sign saying "crypt" and thought - we have to check this out! What a pleasant find after long lines everywhere else - we walked right in, and there was probably 6 other people in there despite the hundreds of people milling around in the plaza above. No opportunities for selfies in front of a famous landmark, I guess. The history of Paris is all right there, and apparently all road distances in France are measured from the "zero" marker in the plaza above.
