I have a question about 1898H large cents and how they were struck. Is it very common for these coins to not have the H due to the die being filled? I am just wondering since I have seem tons of these where the H is almost impossible to see. It just seems really strange. Any input would be appreciated!

It must be a filled die because it appears all 1898s were made at the Heaton mint. I don't have one for comparison here.

KurtS- Exactly! And I actually have a few that are like that. On a couple that are EF, you can see a slight silhouette of the H, but others that are even of similar grade, the H is just nowhere to be found.

That's pretty interesting! I checked Charest's book on die varieties, but saw no mention of this for 1898.

KurtS- really? That is surprising since I have seen so many of them. I wonder if they are so common that they aren't even viewed as a variety.

Here is a pic to give some visual help as to the nature of the variety being discussed.

The H is at the bottom of the coin next to the rim. All the 1898's should have the H in this location.

Yup, ya'll is right. They should have the 'H'.
Note: there were 1,000,000 minted.

Ohhhhhhhh, now I see it. For some reason I could have sworn that the H was just beneath the Date since every other year that the cent was minted at the Heaton mint it was above the wreath. Very interesting and good to know. So why is it that it was in this different location for this one year?
