I was just checking out the CPNum auction. In the second session they list the 1871H Obv #2. I have checked my references and have no idea what #!@#%& they are talking about.
Does anybody have this knowledge that they will impart to me?
THANX in advance

It is important to know what denomination of coin you are asking about. I think type 2 obverse portraits only relate to 5, 25, and 50 cent coins of 1871.

Sorry - it would be either the 25 or 50.

In the Charlton Catalogue, it lists 4 varieties on the .50 cents.

Portrait #2 or H2 can only be found on the 1870LCW, 1871, 1871H, 1872H, 1872A/V and the 1888

My Charlton does not mention.
Can you describe the differences?

How old is your coin guide? Perhaps you need to get a newer issue. Describing an image is not easy.

On the 25 cent coin Q2 deals with the hair on the Queens portrait. It is described as ...A wave, which breaks into three, joins the brow slightly below the crown.

Q1 is described as....Two waves meet slightly below the crown at top of brow

The 1871H Fifty cent coin only comes in type 2...or H2 and is described as....With shamrock behind first jewel of crown. Small space between poorly formed bow and ribbon at the nape of the neck.
