Al-Malik al-Adil Safy ad-Din Abu- Bakr Ahmed ibn Najim ad-Din Ayyub was the Ayyubid Sultan of Egypt and Syria from 1200-1218. He was the son of Najim and father to Abu Bakr the Great. He was given the title of Sayf ad-Din ( Sword of faith).

Interesting coin Ron. At first I thought that there was only one hole and it was like the central holes on Ptolemy bronzes. When I looked closer, however, I noticed that there are indeed two holes and they were punched (due to the corresponding flat spot on the rev). I'm thinking that somewhere in the last 800 years, someone wanted to add eyes to this flattened portrait.

Yes it looks like a minor act of Vandalism doesn't it
Too perfectly positioned to be coincidental
Wonderful patination though
Gives it that beautiful antique look that I have come to demand in my bronze collection
(Well exceptions can sometimes be made)

Next time I see these types up for grabs I think I will double my efforts

Translation:

Obv. margin, "was struck this dirham of Mayafariqin in the year two and", continuing into field (right) "ninety", (left) "and five hundred".

Rev, margin, "the king al-'Adil Sayf al-Din Abu Bakr son of Ayyub".

Rev. center begins with the kalima, "there is no god but Allah alone, there are no others with Him" and then cites the 'Abbasid caliph, "the imam al-Nasir li-Din Allah, commander of the faithful".

Nice coin!
