Note how the area you are looking at is lower than the device? That is because after the strike the die moved a bit and flattened that area on the coin. (Coins are softer than the dies) So when you see the step down, incuse, one color area, remember it is usually MD.

That's Machine Doubling, since the device is reduced in size, and it's shelflike (flat) in appearance.
