The Timurid dynasty was a Sunni Muslim dynasty of Turco-Mongols founded by Tamerlane (Timur). They ruled in Persia and Central Asia from 1370-1507.

Shahrukh Mirza was the son of Tamerlane rueling in Persia & Transoxiana (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Southern Krugyzstan and SW Kazakhstan) from 1405-1447. His capital was in Herat.

Another impressive acquisition, Ron. You've really dived head first into the Islamic stuff.

Interesting pick-up Ron--do you have the Album number?

Sorry Dave I don't. I need to find a good reference on Islamic coinage.

Looks like Album 2405, "fifth series" tanka, introduced in 827. The obverse reads duriba / al-sultan al-a'zam / Shahrukh Bahadur khallad Allah / mulkahu wa sultanahu ("was struck the great sultan Shahrukh Bahadur, may Allah preserve his kingdom and his sultanate". Date and mint (if any) must be off flan at bottom. The reverse has the Sunni kalima at center with the names of the Rashidun is surrounding petals. Bahadur means "warrior" or "brave" but functions mostly as a title of respect, quite common from this period through the Mughals.

Thanks KS again for the translation. Is this information found in Album or is there another reference source I should be looking for? I would like to get a copy of Mitchiner's book, but it's too pricey.

Yes, you should have a copy of Album's "Checklist" (3rd ed., 2011). The spiral-bound version is $35 and a better 'workhorse' than the more expensive hard cover. There are earlier editions but not nearly as extensive.

The Checklist presupposes a working knowledge of numismatic Arabic - mint names, dates, basic formulae. To that end, at the following link you will find Richard Plant's Arabic Coins and How to Read Them. It is essentially a series of lessons, complete with quizzes at the end of each chapter!
https://www.docdroid.net/069SHbh/16447.pdf

Also useful for more than a century now, Codrington's A Manual of Musalman Numismatics. I often refer to the extensive list of Arabic mint names.

I wouldn't spend the money on Mitchiner's Islamic volume. You'll notice it is rarely if ever referenced in dealer or auction listings. At the beginning of each dynasty in Album's Checklist is a list of references. Many are pre-copyright or scholarly articles available online. The BMC 'Oriental', Nutzel (Berlin) and Lavoix (Paris) are all useful museum catalogues with the legends for each coin written out.

It's also good to get to know zeno.ru. It is the digital "standard reference" for Islamic and Oriental coins. If you have trouble registering, contact the site owner at the email listed.

KS thanks for the information, I've ordered Album and downloaded the others. I'm been a member of Zeno for years and always seem to forget to use them.
