Welcome to the club, I think this is one of the most posted nickels on this forum. I posted the same coin and so have many others. Still the same answer, die wear. Nickel is a very hard metal and deteriorates the dies very quickly.

Well I don't disagree with the assessment that it is not a doubled die. But the reason it looks that way looks like to me to see Machine Doubling with some die wear. Yes a double whammy for this coin. IF it had been a variety, it also could have suffered the double whammy also. Just because a coin is a variety doesn't make it immune to other issues with striking/wear.

I can explain all the doubling to be die wear except for the mint mark, which looks like Machine Doubling.
