Hi,

D over nothing. It's just damaged, look at the bottom of the 9 and 7. They are both damaged as well.

That part of the coin took a hit somewhere in its life. So...It's still a cull.

Thanks,
Bill
Rest in Peace

You mean way below it at 4-6:00? That is probably just a die scratch. If it was an original placement of the mint mark, there would be no reason to move it as it doesn't touch any devices. But the weakness tells me it is a scratch. The shape of the scratch doesn't match the curvature of punch of the D.

Again it would be nothing. If we find what appears to be a letter/number on a coin and the devices are smaller or larger than the regular size. It would either be just out eyes/distortion on the coin that makes it look that way. The highest value for this coin would be melt value. Unless the letters would match the same size would it be of interest. But why would they be in that location without the other letters. Wear/damage/polishing on dies can make you eye try to fill in blanks without a real reason for that mark to really be there. Dies are shaped by hubs that place the devices in the correct locations.

I know that you are looking hard and when the right coin comes under your Scope/Lupe you will know instantly that it is something. You will just not have a doubt when you find it. It takes a while before you know the difference. But you have great images that would tell anyone what you found just from. So keep looking and posting. Not only the poster learns, readers as well.
