Looks like a lamination peeling to me. I've seen these before. Looks like it is in a straight line. Makes me wonder if the rolling process of the stock material is rolled or pushed with a devices that weakens the metal at the foundry. After cut and and adding the upset rim, the metal breaks loose. Possible?

It looks even more like lettering when the photo is inverted.
