I can't give you a explanation as to why it happens a lot on the 1980's LMC's, but I've noticed it's very common and easy to find.

Hello everyone. I was told by another collector those marks are wood grain markings. Not sure if they carry a premium.

They are called roller lines.

They can be found on wheat cents and nickels/dimes as well. Even un-struck planchets show them:

Bate, you remember Johnnies cousin Jo-Jo? It was in the '80's he was interned at the US mint, prior to his own private minting venture and subsequent incarceration...

Seems we here or can easily find references to the major changes in coining presses, but not much details concerning the other production methods or rather machinery used and if and when they've been transitioned or upgraded. Thanks, Doug.
