I know we saw them before but I forgot what they were called and why it happened.

Very nice find and congratulations! These are called Lathe Lines. They forgot to polish them completely off of the die. I remember finding my example in June of 2018 (it was 2 months ago). http://goccf.com/t/321118

Interesting. I wonder if the die went into the witness protection program during the hard cleaning process. Quality control in Denver is much tighter now than it was 20+ years ago, and the equipment is far better, too.

Fortcollins, quality control in Denver has always been pretty good, but it's much better now. Although, this was the notorious year for the 1996 D LMC's to have Lathe Lines showing. Not sure how they missed polishing these Lathe Lines off, but it somehow slipped through quality control.

QC in Denver was tightened significantly after the Wisconsin extra leaf quarter debacle and the Inspector General's investigation. First and last strike inspections and increased random spot checks make it much less likely that significant die issues will go unnoticed.

They forgot to polish them completely off of the die.
The polishing is done before it is called a die. So what is it called and what does it look like?
1996-Lincoln-With-Circular-Lines-In-The-Obverse
So the lines would be polished off the die blank
Just like the procedure of blanks/planchets and coins, the same is true with the dies as well. They start off with an even different name:
1996-Lincoln-With-Circular-Lines-In-The-Obverse
Knowing the correct term helps us understand the procedure of creating coins. I have other close ups if anyone want to see more?

Oh okay. So it's called a die blank then? I'm sorry if I got the terminology mixed up.

I wasn't going to single you out. Anyone could have said that. I had the images on my host and used the correct term.
