It's very high grade circulated Barber half dollar.

However, it has been cleaned harshly, which is no-no in coin collecting.

pndedy,

Don't let your wife touch your finds. She did you no favor! :(

Cleaning it reduced the value significantly. AU-50 Details, cleaned.

Next time if you want to "clean" coin finds, use pure 100% acetone (not nail polish remover). It'll take most of the gunk and dirt off a coin without making the coin a problem coin with a "details" grade.

I don't want to be harsh here, just brutally honest. Coming out of the ground with (maybe) some staining on it, could probably still have led it to a nice solid AU-50 grade without details. Which would yield a $300-$400 coin in such grade.

Now, you're looking in the 100 range or so being cleaned.

Gotta learn lessons somehow. Take the others advice as it will be very helpful in the long run!

I am so glad I found this forum, on the metal detecting sites I'm on, they don't talk to much about coin restoration, in the short time I've been on this site I have learned a tremendous amount and am very grateful. Thank you !!

au deets. nice find. should ask admin to change title of thread as it was confusing. Barber halves were first minted in 1892 and was really wondering if this was a real 1889 barber half.

Heck of a MD find! Congrats, I can't imagine the heart rate increase seeing a Barber come out of the ground, and one which apparently saw little commercial use compared to its peers. So many possibilities. What everyone said about the cleaning is correct, so even more reason to keep vs selling it
