Not sure if its a die cap, or just lightly struck? Thanks for looking.

looks like a strike thru; however, it the coin is underweight, there was not enough planchet metal to fill the dies and bring up the design.

I'm curious about the weight myself. Thanks, Doug.

Now that one may be a question for Mike Diamond. It does have the looks of something to do with a obverse die impression, like Spence referred to as PIDT, but this looks more contact driven than a pass-through effect. Have no idea what to call it or it's cause?

If it's underweight, than that might be why the reverse details didn't fill out. Or it could be a weak strike. I'll contact Mike Diamond, and we'll see what he thinks.

I question the thin planchet theory because of the fullness of the strike on the obverse. If it were a thinned planchet, then both sides would be weaker. Probably struck through something soft. Looks like it may have had a tail on it on UNITED also.

Assuming the weight is normal, this would be a "greasy ghost". Die fill ("grease") tends to migrate to areas of lower effective striking pressure. Some of these areas lie opposite large, centrally-located design elements, like busts and building. UNITED has also been blurred by grease.

Are you taking about the forehead and hair? That's a die polishing issue.

Sorry, I meant the thickness of the coin all around. Its thinner near the top of Lincoln head only.

I'm thinking a worn out die with lots of grease and grime.

If you look at a clear tube of cents you will note that there are many that have that issue normally.
