It has been posted elsewhere about the pros and cons of certain TV hucksters
and their various marketing techniques.

I might add very few pros!

Allow me to start with the New, First Strike 2008 W Silver Eagle;

Something-Old-And-Something-New

Something-Old-And-Something-New

Yeah sure I fell into the hype, but for the price, I could not duplicate this on my own!

Bet you've all heard that line from the various shows!

Any way I bought it, and now have a Burnished Die, Mint state, Uncirculated,
West Point Mint Marked, PCGS graded MS69, First Strike, Silver Eagle!

Any more superlatives I'm missing?

Now onto another subject, Gold Plating... Most agree that it holds no value
over and above the face value of the coin. In the majority of cases this holds true
and is just another ploy to market an over priced set of Statehood Quarters to
its unsuspecting audience!

But what if it holds historical significance?

To honor the 125th anniversary of the Mint's big mistake I give you...

Something Old, The 1883 Racketeer Nickel;

Something-Old-And-Something-New

Something-Old-And-Something-New

Sure, you may say it's just a Gold Plated Nickel, but to merchants of the time, one could have lost a days worth of sales by being duped into giving change for $5.00 on five cent purchase!

Well there you have it, my recent acquisitions, be they foolish or not, they make
me happy!

Hope you enjoy the pics! (If not the commentary!)

Paul

very nice

I've been wanting to get me a Racketeer Nickel just because of it's historical significance.

Think what 100 years will do to the Liberty Dollar

I just can't bring myself to buy a first strike ASE, for resale maybe but that's not what I do. The fact that PCGS gives that designation merely because they are there by a certain date confounds me...I feel it hurts their credibility as a TPG. If the mint were to take the first 100 coins (or 200...whatever..then where does it stop ? ) from every new die- I'll go along with that, until then - no money from me. Nice coin though, I do like the ASE's, I have several- just no "First Strikes"

I do have a gold plated "Racketeer" nickel, I tried to find one that looked like it had been plated back when they were being counterfeited. I guess there's no real way to tell- but it has thick plating, is an AU coin, and the plating is not as shiny as recent coins I have seen that are gold plated. So, I believe it may have duped an unsuspecting shop owner , very interesting that coin !

Coinaholic....
You didn't mention exactly how much you did pay for this "t.v. First Strike" ASE .......
And which program was it ?........Joan Rivers ?.......(awww just kidding!)

Well....it is a nice Uncirculated '08 ASE my friend !....(regardless how many of us wouldn't pay .02 cents extra for the controversial label of "First Strike" !)

Thanks GO, and congratulations on your move up to moderator!

InfiniteInterestI agree with you, it is misrepresented by the package being the first strike and not the coin. I wouldn't have done it either if I had access to a shop with all the finds that you come across!!

eaglefoot Well actually none of them! I got it through ebay and after the 10% off, and shipping discount $34.00 But it was the two guys on coincountry that got me started on the quest. They had it for $39.00+shipping, and I thought "hey I can beat that", and did! And is Joan Rivers hocking coins now this I must have missed?

At first with that opening of something old and something new I thought we were going to be discussing a wedding.
So what did you pay for those.
I've always liked that "first strike" stuff. I tried to imagine someone standing there at the Mint at the end of the line where the coins are made, reaching down and grabbing the first one. Of course the problem would be that there could be only one first strike. The next would be a second strike.
So if you got the one and only, really, honest to goodness first strike, WOW.
I'm still waiting for the adds for second strikes, third strikes and even the last strike coin(s).

I'm waiting for the TPGs to come out with a certified "Last Strike" so I can be sure I am getting the very last one ever produced in a year .

Seriously, those are nice looking coins - I especially like the plated nickel, in part because it's hard to find the unplated ones in as good a condition as the plated ones.

Very nice

Coinaholic........

Burlington Northern Railway will certify your coin "Last Strike" and slab it for you I've heard. You just have to wave down the engineer and ask him nicely and let him look the coin over !....

I guess Burlington Northern Railway won't be necessary although I'm a little confused by the grade.

I reckon that would have been against their moral code!
Guess I could paint shop that in as well!

Something-Old-And-Something-New

There I took it back and demanded they fix it! They then sent me to an even lower basement for this designation!

More better jbuck?
