Meow has found a very damaged penny. At first Meow thought it was vandalized. But if one was to look closely, the mint mark is completely in intact at bottom of the crater. Meow is fairly sure all of damage on this coin is zinc rot.

Yes, you stand correct. The mint mark is about to fall off of this coin soon from the Zinc Rot setting in badly. I think Coop should add this for his educational files, as it would be a very good candidate.

To Meow it looks like a D shaped antlion waiting for a meal. Or a D shaped bomb that failed to detonate.

Don't you think the zinc rot forming a crater to try and eat the mintmark is interesting?

Yes interesting. @coop has a graphic that he compiled showing zinc rot around mintmarks. Not sure that I can find it easy, but maybe he will repost it when he reads this thread.

Hmmm, so it is common occurrence. Meow thought it was a fairly unique thing. So one day soon the Denver minted penny can pass for one made in Philly.

Like Crazy calls them, "stinkin' zincolns." Just caused by zinc rot, PMD. Super common on the zincolns.
