I purchased this coin a week or so ago and removed some PVC residue it had on it. Today I started cropping my pictures of it and thought that it looks a little funky. The date looks way bigger than it should be. I don't do much in 3CS, so could I have bought a fake? The more I look at it the more I am positive that it is a contemporary counterfeit.

I believe you're correct that it is a contemporary counterfeit. Those reverse stars look cartoonish and the obverse star lines are hilariously unparallel, it looks almost hand drawn. a very interesting piece indeed. Edit: I'd like to add that contemporary counterfeit 3CS's are collectible, I found more information here: http://goccf.com/t/273826

@CL1899, that is a really interesting piece. Could you please also post the diameter and weight so that we have that information recorded on this thread? Thx!

It's a contemporary counterfeit. Note the stars on the reverse and the shield lines.

Even as a fake it's collected. I have a couple myself. This one looks a bit more obvious as a fake than some of the others.

Contemporary counterfeit, I know at least two people working on books about them.

Spence, I am so sorry for this super long delay, I have been really busy. Diameter: 14 MM Weight: .62 G Would this also be considered as 'contemporary bogus' as I see on ebay?

This is a counterfeit which was made while the real coins were still in circulation. By "contemporary" it is meant that the coin was probably counterfeited in 1861 or within a few years after that date. The cheap Chinese fakes that flood ebay these days are often called "modern" counterfeits to help distinguish between the two. Contemporary counterfeits have numismatic value and collector interest; most modern counterfeits do not.
