Those aren't Die Clashes. These are called Pre Die Break Depressions.

Quote: Pre Die Break Depressions Hadn't heard this term before. I was more thinking that they were the start of the die chips we affectionately call "hornets nests".

@Spence - Wexler's is where I learned that terminology (Pre Die Break Depressions). The beginning of a Die Chip. Check out the DDR listing in Particular the ones for the Homestead Quarter and you will see how he describes it for the roof line impressions. I brought it up to coop once on a post a long time ago and he said basically "Say what?" Then once the Chip has fully developed you have the "Hornet's Nest" you know I still haven't found one of those.

Okay thanks. Just to be super-clear, the depressions are in the die, correct? That would cause there to be a slight bulge on the resulting coins, such as shown in the OP's images. However, since no metal has really flaked off of the die, we don't call it a die chip. Just want to make sure that I understand...

Yep, that's how I learned it too. I got that term from John Wexler's site doubleddie.com. For an example: Quote: 2015-P 25¢ NE WDDR-034
Description: Doubling shows along the lower left side of window R2.
Die Markers: Obverse: None significant. Reverse: Pre-die break depressions can be found above the left roof and the right roof.

loquixx... "this coin is collectible and get a premium?"
What year and mint-of-origin is the cent? Without further information, I'd say it's collectible only if you like what you have in-hand. I don't think you'd get a premium for it.

The overlay should be of the same/close year of designs. This one is a 1998: Note the difference in the location of the 'TY' on LIBERTY? Thus the area in question is a die chip.
