Is there a definitive way to determine a 1967 Kennedy half dollar is/was a SMS issue? Besides luster, finish, relief, are there specific markers to look for?

Bingo! That's what I was looking for. I guess it's fairly easy to distinguish between a new 1967 SMS Kennedy and a business strike. I have found many (including 65's and 66's) roll hunting. The luster and finish are gone on most of these coins. I was looking for another way to determine that.

Thank you all!

The best business strikes probably look more SMS than the worst SMS strikes do.

So any SMS coin found in circulation (if it can be identified as a SMS coin), I'm thinking is pretty much toast! With the exception of melt value.

Well, it depends on how long it was in circulation, but probably.
