I'll need to start reading up on grading of this set. Probably stick with non FBL due to cost. If you were going for TPG graded, would you try to get all PCGS or all NGC or would it matter to you? I'm thinking of putting together an MS65 set. Could consider a Kennedy or Walker set too. Walker would have to be circulated say in EF40 or so though. Edited by txgolfer56 08/20/2018 6:40 pm

Franklins are a great choice in TPG 65 and quite affordable, though it will take patience to put it together. Since you'll be displaying slabs, I'd stick with one company or the other. Walkers in TPG 40/45 - that's a different, and much more expensive, ballgame. Good luck!

I would go with the Franklin halves in PCGS MS 65 slabs. Sounds like a great project and be sure to post us some pics!

If it were me I would look at PCGS and/or NGC in the 65 range, I'd consider buying FBL where possible though, for most of the years it's only a small percentage more than non FBL. Of course a few of those S mint Franklins will likely be too expensive with FBL but you should be ok on 90%+ of coins in the set!

Franklins are my favorites! If I was starting a new slabbed set, I'd do what Coinfrog says and stick with one TPG. Personally, I think I'd lean towards PCGS. Right now I'm working on a set of Kennedys that I expect to complete early next year. A set Walkers in EF40 would be completely beyond me money wise, but if you can do it you could be proud of that one for a long time.

I enjoy Franklin halves, one of my first sets completed as a kid in mostly circulated faction. My passion now are cameo proof Franklins. I hope you enjoy putting together a set.

I would do PCGS for sure.
As for FBL or not, if it was me I would just look for the nicest ones I can. The FBL set is pretty impossible and I get that you want it all to match and also get the other side that some FBLs are the same price, so I would just go for the nicest you can for that and if its FBL it's FBL if not oh well

I still have 9 IHC's to complete my IHC set. Only 1 is a tougher date. The rest can be found in MS63BN or MS64BN without costing an arm and a leg.

Looking forward to hearing about your progress on this set. Like others, Franklins were the first set I completed, though mine weren't slabbed. It's a very approachable set when talking about a Dansco, and I'd love to hear your experience completing this from a slabbed perspective. Good luck!

I have two sets of the Franklin halves. At a coin show last weekend a dealer had all of them and many of each. One stop and you could make an entire set. None in slabs though. Same dealer I purchased a 55 Doubled Die Cent from. He also had a 1856 Flying Eagle cent but way, way our of my price range.

I like the idea. A short, doable set. Second only to the Ike, in my opinion. Also, it was the second Dansco I completed (after the Ike).

I think I will stick with business strike Franklins. No need to chase proof, cameo, deep cameo, ultra cameo, first strike, etc. I can get solid examples in MS65 and MS65 FBL without spending a fortune.
