I found this 5 cent coin that has been in my collection since 1971 of a 1966 Thomas Jefferson Filled in die, where the Pony Tail is almost gone. Is there any value in it?

This was caused by an over polished die. They were trying to get rid of a Die Clash, so they were polishing off the die. Polishing the die also extends the life of the die as well. You have a keeper. http://www.error-ref.com/thinning-a...gn-elements/

It is worth $1,000,000...to you, a find from years ago, happy memories (?), easier life, spaghetti noodles instead of Ramen for dinner.... but to me and many others it looks to be a fairly nice condition '66, good filler in an album as AU55, maybe ...$.15? Those found today CRHing are beat to heck.

@PTP, it is also interesting that parts of Jefferson't ponytail are missing. This might be due to some grease in the die during the striking process causing not all details to be fully struck up.

Actually it is not a filled in tie. If it were a Struck Through Grease issue, then the highest devices would be flat and widened. Not the devices are just the opposite. They are thinned. How could that happen. All raised devices are tapered. Wider at the bottoms on the coin thinner at the tops of the coin.

So the die is a negative. So if the fields were reduced and it removed part of the mid devices, then height of the devices would be reduced just like on this coin. Why are the devices tapered? So the coins will fall off the die. If they were just the opposite, the first coin would be stuck into the die on the first strike. Hope this helps.
