This may be one of my more serendipitous acquisitions of this sort (as part of a larger group I had selected out of the pile, I calculate it ended up costing me $1).

Condition is less than stellar, but I've repeatedly counted the leaves in the wreath and keep coming up with only 15. Am I seeing this wrong, or is this in fact the scarce (and pricey) "aged" portrait variant?

I think the one you're referring to, was minted @ Heaton. Your's is London.

I hope I'm wrong.

Lucky Cuss, that's a great junk bin find! A British dealer would definitely have it in their main stock.

I find the three obverses from 1881 very difficult to tell apart, but this does look like an Obverse 11 (as per Spink's catalogue).

The older edition of Spink's that I possess doesn't identify any varieties whatsoever regarding the 1881 penny. That prompted me to start searching online for some pictures to which I might compare my specimen.

I looked here: https://headsntails14.wordpress.com...863-to-1901/

No pictures, but it would seem from the list that if mine's indeed an obverse 11, then it'd be a Gouby BP1881C, or alternatively a Freeman 106, rarity R6.

NGC's page seems to indicate that the 1881 with the 1880 portrait is the valuable type.

I'm pretty discouraged at the overall paucity of information, and how what is available seems contradictory. So I remain somewhat uncertain as to exactly what I have. It bears mention that on this side of the pond, on the whole Victoria pennies that have seen any circulation whatsoever are tossed by the handful into the "junk" or "bargain" bin. In short, a variety that'd be desirable in the U.K. most likely will go entirely unnoticed over here, and even if identified, it might at best elicit a yawn in any case.

Obverse 9 reverse J not obverse 11 11 has a count of 8 teeth inclusive from colon after D and colon after G Obverse 9 has 7 . Obverse 10 has a more rounded back where this obverse 9 is pretty much straight :) Freeman 102
