It is minted with a D all over it, letters missing and of course the obvious it's broken, but not corrosive damage? I can't find anything on this!!

It's a 1996, Close AM on reverse. That is indeed zinc rot, what it does.

@LcStar, that cent is just about ready to crumble into dust. The corrosion is due to the deterioration of the zinc core.

It's the darned zinc mice. They nibble on Zincolns all the time.

Yep. This is what happens when the Copper plating breaks. It exposes the Zinc core, and it starts to rot. It's worth only face value. Just a heavily damaged coin.

Maybe not even face . I bet no merchant would except it .
Even a bank might give you a hard time trying to trade it in for a new penny .
