Hi all,

Just need some info on how an elliptical coins occurred. What is the best way to know if this is a manmade error, re:vise grip, etc. or a legitimate mint error.

I have this 1966-10 centavo Philippine coin English series which is elliptical coin, I think this coin is minted in the US during that time.

Your opinion is highly appreciated.

Best wishes,

noel biscocho

G'day, it will assist if you can add pics - both sides - to your query. And include a scale, please.

Hi Peter THOMAS,

Thanks for your reply. However,a picture of the coin is not yet possible as of this time, maybe in the following days to come.

I'll try to come up with a picture probably next week. Until then.

Best wishes,

The way it has been explained to me in the past. An elliptical coin is type of clipped coin error. It can happen when a blank is punched out in the strip but does not fall thru and gets punched again off center. This creates the elliptical clip and the crescent clip. But I was told that most of the elliptical clips we find were created when a blank is an incomplete punch error which means a punch partially went thru the strip then the strip advances forward and the punch then stamps out a blank with a curved line from the incomplete punch still in the blank. Next the blank gets the rim applied creating the planchet. Then the planchet gets stamped by the dies and the force of the strike can cause the coin to break apart at the incomplete punch seam. This creates the elliptical clip and the crescent clip. The difference between the two is the first possibility will create a clip without a rim and the strike will probably not be centered. The second and most common possibility will create a clip with a rim and the coin looks centered if all of the coin were there. You would look for counterfeit just like you would for any other clip. This is kind of wordy but I hope it helps.

Hi pyrbob,

Thanks for the info.

Just for the sake of an argument, te rim is completely intack, it has a reeded edge and made of clad steel but it does not stick to a magnet. The obverse and the reverse is not an off center strike I suppossed. There is no deliberate marking that this was created manually or outside thhe mint. I dunno what to think of it right now.

I'll try to post a picture maybe on Sunday and you can freely give your opinion together with others who may want to share some information relative to this coin of mine.

Thank you very much and best wishes.

Sounds like an eliptical clip that broke apart during the striking process. I'll watch for the photos.
