Both have environmental damage.

The nickel has spent a lot of time in the ground.

Thank you sir. Does make sense now. On rhe cent, that color of red is normal for copper? By the looks of it I probably picked it up outside the shop where it sat in a pool of oil while getting run over.

Yes, the red color can be caused by environmental damage.

BTW, neither are "clad" nor even "copper plated" coins, impossibility.
