Hi I'm new to the coin error community. I came across a very dirty rough 1987 D penny. As I started to clean it off, I noticed what appears to be a small number 4 above liberty. There is a scratch next to the "4".I I have never heard of or seen an example of any thing like this. But I'm very new to searching, and my knowledge is shallow. Any insight or feedback is appreciated. Thank you

to the CCF! Is the 4 that you're seeing raised or does it appear as if it's been punched? Cannot tell by the pic you posted. If it is punched into the cent then it would be post strike damage. It would not have left the mint like that.

Thanks. It is raised. No doubt.

Well it matches nothing on the coin. SO it is with damage or a split on the plating. Nothing on the dies would have created that.

It's damage. Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint).
