I just picked up this coin at the LCS for a good price, but don't know which TPG slabbed this. My main fear is the lack of a authentication number. Any help is appreciated.

It's just a basement company or someone who self slabbed it (possibly your LCS did it), but the grade on that one should be ignored and the coin treated as raw

That explains the price of $7. Haha

Hope you didn't pay that $7! For a $2 coin...

Bought it a while ago and am not too miffed about the $5. Even if its not a "real" slab still a nice coin to own with a bit more protection to it.

Looks self-slabbed. All the ones I do are graded 70.

Quote: the grade on that one should be ignored Personally, I believe that to be true of any entombed coin. Grading is subjective, so it's all only in our heads anyway! Real, honest TPGs, however are a great source to authenticate questionable coins. A rather good place to get an idea of some of the different TPGs that are out there is http://sampleslabs.com/. The coin your nickel came in looks like a BCW or Collector Safe brand slab holder. There are others on the market, and you simply snap it shut and can open it whenever you like.

The one in the pic is a basement slabbing company. IMO, the only "real" TPGs are PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG. As for SEGS and PCI holders, it depends on the coin. Old Hallmark slabs, (not some new basement slab company trying to imitate them!) and ANA slabs similar to the old white ANACS holders are also some more reputable companies which are no longer in business. Remember, however - buy the coin, not the holder.

It's a mutt, a mongrel slab.

The title of this topic needs to be altered/changed or something. Very obviously this is not any TPG's slab.

''Bottom Feeder Slab Company'' I'm surprised they didn't grade it PF-75 . Just realized the slab says PR-70 ; PR is poor. They don't even know how to designate a coin .

Real, honest TPGs, however are a great source to authenticate questionable coins. ^^ THIS!! ^^ Yes, that is a fancy holder. Also, Top TPGs are FAIRLY reliable regarding grade, but not foolproof! At least not until a foolproof approach to grading is discovered/implemented. I trust them to authenticate more than to grade.
