Just saw this on the Bay, and reminded me of a quote by one of our members on this sight: you can practically sell anything on the Bay. These people cant even see the picture clearly, the seller is SHOUTING that he doesn't guarantee authenticity and it still sell's for $2025.00 Newbie first sale: Seller information elid93295 (0 ) https://www.ebay.com/itm/1944-Steel...123335927317Condition:-- Time left: Time left:3m 44s Time Left 4m 0s Today 4:54PM Current bid:US $2,025.00 [ 84 bids ] Seller's statement: Quote: I have come across this 1944 steel penny. I looked it up and could only find 1943 ones and a bunch of articles on the 1944 version. I think it's real but I'm not a collector so I have no use for it. If you are a collector of rare error coins then you will certainly want thus more than me. Apparently seller did not expect the bids go this high so then he adds: Quote: seller added the following information: Note: I have no guarantee that this is a legitimate 1944 steel coin. I have not verified its authenticity in any way. Edited by Chase007 09/03/2018 6:32 pm

Wouldn't there be a weight difference between a steel and cooper 1944?

Good point, nobody bothered asking, there were all in too much of a hurry to get ripped off ( they only have themselves to blame) I'm sorry, someone who throw's away Two grands just like that, don't deserve better. Seller is going on Vaca for a while.

I mean even if your not a collector and you want to sell something of value like this I would have at least taken it to a jeweler to be weighed to make sure, if I didn't have a scale myself. I mean the seller made no guarantee it was authentic and didn't list it that way so the buyer better hope its real cause that would be a hard sale to get reversed

Sadly it is a legitimate sale.. It wouldn't have been taken down, the seller made no bogus statements and CYA with disclaimer. He is free and clear. Buyer may be able to file a case but most likely would lose, only hope is buyer stops payment and fights it that way. Greed and lust shout very loud, and folks today have never practiced much self-restraint either. As in Forrest Gump, "It Happens".

Unfortunately, garbage like this severely hurts the entire hobby. It would be nice if a Congresscritter or Senator would request a GAO study on ebay sales of counterfeit or altered coins. Just having a GAO study would shine light on the fraud. It might also lead to some warranty reforms that would curb the scams and curb ebay's indifference. One suggestion would be penalizing the auctioneer ( ebay) ten times the auction revenue generated by the sale for each sale of a counterfeit or altered coin. I guarantee that would "encourage" ebay to clean up its act. There is a reason I don't buy or sell on ebay. I prefer buying coins I can examine in hand. Just my Two Cents' worth.

As long as ebay makes money on these fraudulent and counterfeit coin sales they have no incentive to "clean up their act". For every sale that gets challenged (and refunded) there are many more that just fly under the radar and on into oblivion.

Quote: For every sale that gets challenged (and refunded) there are many more that just fly under the rada Couldn't be further from the truth, there are simply too many to fight. Quote: There is a reason I don't buy or sell on eBay There are still many decent, honest sellers who take pride in their profession and there are also plenty good coins being offered, just got to be aware and be knowledgeable on what we are looking for and what we buy. Counterfeiters will always be there, can't let them tarnish a good, honest seller's reputation.

Hmm , zero reviews and only 1 follower .Yeah what an incentive to think this raw coin is real . What were those bidders thinking ?

T-BOP, the bidders on ebay are unfortunately crazily stupid. They probably don't think about their decision, and just place a bid on the item anyways.
