I admit that I use electrolysis on coins I have little hope for, but I also have tubs of distilled water on my window sills with many coins soaking, usually for many months.

I'm curious as to how often the rest of you take out those soaking coins and attack them with the toothbrush. I do it when I get around to it, but I'm wondering if I should brush more often.

Also, I'm not sure when to stop the process. If I keep going, trying to get that last bit of crud, is there much danger that the brushing will also take of some of the desirable patina?

IMO soaking in distilled water is a very slow process and will take a very long time. Soaking in olive is faster, though it does darken the surface on AE coins if you soak them too long. But I've always had better result with olive oil than with distilled water. You have to do less scrubbing and the dirt.

I've found weekly scrubbing to be sufficient. Caution is advisable when the surfaces are weak; in that case, a softer brush and a more passive technique is advisable, either longer soaks or leave it alone completely in oil and wait for a long time for it to clean itself.

I tend to scrub my soakers every couple of days, purely because I can't wait! After a few weeks I move them into olive oil and just shake them around every so often and they clean themselves.

Ron'echizento' Just wondering can see photos of the olive oil cleaning. Because I've just got a few soaking in Olive oil at the moment and I'll like to see what they look like after cleaning.
