Hi everybody

I'm 20 years old and have been collecting coins for about 14 years now. However another hobby that I've had since a child was art. I think that coin art and coin enamelling could become my new favourite hobby , that's if I find out how to do it!

Does anybody know the process? Which kind of enamel paint? Brushes ? Etc? I have seen some amazing examples online for sale done by individuals , most of whom aren't willing to share their tricks of the trade.

Thanks very much in advance to anybody who's replies.

((a and of course I will not be painting on valuable collectable coins , more than likely pre euro coins currently of no value))

Kindest regards

John

Hi John - I think you'll find most of us here are pretty much clueless about that kind of thing because we collect, conserve, and preserve coins in their original state. There are certainly exceptions (counterstamps, damaged coins, counterfeits, hobo coins, etc.) but altering coins is not generally what we're all about.

That's a generalization for sure -- there are probably some folks here on CCF who do go for that stuff, and, I do appreciate the talents of the artists that make hobo nickels and such. I would be interested in seeing some of your pieces if you get that far. I don't see any harm in converting a common quarter with a mintage of several hundred million into a piece of art.

Doesn't enameling require intense heat? I thought enamel paint had to be fired and I'm not certain how coins would hold up to the heat of a kiln.

I like your avatar, by the way.

Are you talking about true enameling or just painting coins with an enamel paint? Not the same thing.

I think a problem could be with what is available over there compared to what is here for doing that. Not sure what you want to do but if you just paint with normal enamel paints, allow to dry, should work. Heating may help to dry also but excessive heat may also do some damage. I've seen art stores here with possibly hundreds of varieties of paints.
