Hi! I'm new to coin collecting, and have been lurking on here for a while trying to learn as much as I could before posting. I have a 1998 D penny and noticed this "hole" on Lincoln's face as well as a few other little holes around his shirt. I apologize if there's an obvious answer for this however I've searched and can't find anything on this. Anyone have an idea on whether or not this is a legitimate error worth looking into?

The pics are a bit dark, but I would say that what you are pointing out is damage that split the copper plating and allowed zinc rot to begin. That is evidenced by the small "craters" on the coin.

Even if not zinc rot, I believe that is all damage.

@woolf, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with @spruette001 that these areas are just damage rather than being mint errors.

If you have an image of the reverse, you will probably see a pushed out area opposite the mark on the head. If it were a mint error, the reverse would be normal. But the 4 lower dots into the coin tells us it is damaged.

It's a typical example of Zinc rot.
