I've had this nickel in a jar since I was a kid. Any idea how the edge may have gotten that shape? Thanks for your input.

On CCF, a Jefferson nickel is a modern coin, so I moved your post to the appropriate section for the proper attention.

to CCF. Not a mint error if that is what you were thinking. Looks neat. Weight would be interesting to know. Looks like some kind of a die was used to cut/stamp it like that.

Has a bottle cap-like appearance. Someone a while back had a good time 'reworking' the coin--post mint creation I'd imagine.

In the days before TV dinners when food was actually prepared in the kitchen for your family, , a common practice was to take inexpensive coins, like the copper large cent and Two Cent Pieces and"modify" them for kitchen utensil use. A scalloped edge like this would have had a hole in the middle and mounted on a handle to be used as the edger for pie crusts.

It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD), but a good example of it! I would keep it, since it's very interesting.

Note the normal rim is distorted all around both sides of the coin. It is all PSD. It is not exact, so it was probably hand done.
